Nancy has fun with the CausePlay Carolinas characters at FS Series' Cupcake Run at Brier Creek in October.

An Interview with Nancy Meredith, “Celebrate Your Mother" 5K Race Director

The “Celebrate Your Mother” 5K is just a few days away! 1 of Us is the recipient of this inaugural 5K event, and we couldn’t be more thankful. All are invited to participate and run or walk at his or her own pace. Everyone in the family is encouraged to participate, from the tiniest members of the family in strollers to the four-legged furry ones on leashes.

We caught up with Nancy Meredith, Wake Forest FS Series Race Director, to learn more about this upcoming race. FS Series is a Raleigh based organization dedicated to Charity, Fitness, and Fun. They organize, time, promote and manage fitness events across Central North Carolina and give back to the community. Nancy has been involved with FS Series for a number of years as both a runner and a volunteer. Most recently, she stepped into a new role as Race Director for Wake Forest. She has done a fantastic job organizing this race and we cannot wait for it to all come together next Sunday, in celebration of Mother’s Day.

What is your role with FS Series?

"I help out with a variety of runs throughout the year ranging from staffing the refreshment and packet pickup tables to organizing volunteers. For the races in Wake Forest specifically, I am the Race Director so I do just about everything that goes into setting up those runs. This includes updating the website, signing up volunteers, getting permits, making sure the course is certified as a true 5K, promotion materials, pre-race communications, sponsors … it’s really a never-ending list! I have been running since high school track and have run lots of different events including 5k, 10k, duathlon, triathlons, marathons, half marathons, mud runs – I think the only thing I haven't done is a full Ironman. So I use my experience as a participant to help me in planning out events."

What is the story behind the “Celebrate Your Mother" 5k?

“I met Carla (1ofUs Operations Manager) at a running club, and we got to know each other. At the time, I was not a Race Director but we casually talked about the possibility of doing a FS Series 5K for 1ofUs in Wake Forest. Once I moved into this role as Race Director, and we needed a beneficiary for our Mother’s Day run, I reached out to Carla to get 1ofUs involved. With the focus of 1ofUs being women’s cancers, it was a natural partnership for this Mother’s Day event.”

Tell us more about the name of the race, “Celebrate Your Mother”.

"We wanted the race to be a celebration of cancer survivors, as well as a celebration of all mothers in general. It has all worked out with the theme of celebration – especially with our partnership with Nothing Bundt Cakes. All race participants will receive a tiny bundt cake after they finish the course to really make it feel like a celebration. Everyone has a mother and everyone should come out – men, women, children, family, pets – everyone is invited to come out and celebrate the mothers in their life."

What kinds of special details do you have planned for the race?

"All participants get a t-shirt, a colorful and fun finishers medal, a “bundtini” from Nothing Bundt Cakes, and a gift certificate to Smoothie King. We have a runner’s village where all of our sponsors will be set up, face painters, a bounce house, a DJ... it’s really designed to be a celebration."

What advice would you give someone who isn’t sure if they should participate?

"Just do it! This race is designed for everyone at every level of fitness. It is a certified, true 3.1 course, so if you are competitive you can go as fast as you want. We have awards for 13 different age categories, 1st place through 3rd place. It will be a fun celebration and if you aren’t competitive, it will be a great way to start your morning before you head out to your Mother’s Day brunch or whatever else you have planned for the day."
